Time
Out.
There's a war for time in progress. It's
been going on for ages. Approaches and tactics change. We, as
a coalition, are concerned with time's value. We thought we'd
share it with you - as you're our best and only customers.
Time has been sought as extra, precious, saved. It has been avoided
as lost, dead, and wasted. It has been considered with its relations
to life, space, and value.
Currently, it is running out as a resource - and, being the primary
reason for our alliance - we will detail the history of time only
so far as it enlightens your choices of action. First, let's see
just where you find yourselves today, shall we?
Got that feeling that investing in the future suspends your life
until after life? Feel like (past) life has passed you by? Both
are very observant and true.
Every time in the past that you sold
your time you lost its use. That's easy to comprehend. Look all
around you. The generations of time layered onto each other as
time separated essentially from its creator(s). Haunting, eh?
When the mereness of propertied time became commodified
time, it's lease on your remaining life time was extended. It's
like the in-your-face victory dance that never ends. The endlessness
of deities and royal landlords was shattered into thousands of
eternal alarm clocks going off in your head.
Our political Left and Right have tried to stop the cries of foul
play, but you seem to think they're just part of the weight of
the past around your neck. Once again, you're correct. Nonetheless,
here's the ledger book on time:
The books are even! In fact, we agree that they're as balanced
as when a time clock puts the tick into your talk. There will
be no complaints accepted. After all, societies overselling the
future can only recycle the past. And we only are agents of supply
and demand, baby! Oh - and, in case you read or watch the news,
no one up here is taking stock in you down there anymore. The
exchange-value of your time just hit rock bottom! That's life...
er, or what you get when you agree to sell it. Take it like the
hollow wo/man you now are - without time or space. You see, to
get anywhere in time, you cross space - and we own that as well
from those earlier social contracts we mentioned. Remember the
introduction and globalized sale of space into property? While
you were quibbling over how to sell your time (via chattlery,
indenturement, or wage) all those beads, coins, conquistadors,
hungry mobs on horses, buildings with flapping colored cloths
waving o'erhead and such ushered in the invisible lines - and
the fees and penalties for crossing them. Yeah - all that. Well,
it's still here and is acting on our borrowed time, so to speak....
That's the situation. You and the others around now - and all
your relatives - made the deal. Pardon the cute phrase - live
with it. As if most of you can barely survive. Time is bound now
- and so are you.
Well, maybe you thought we issued this with arms open? You're
so, so wrong this time. We are here to collect from the last holders
of time for an interest payment for all the rest of you - past,
present, and future - who are out of time. Yes - the past is gone.
Yes - the future is as well. The moment is dwindling.
Some of you believed in all the past life, reincarnated life,
and afterlife non-evidence. That was a real coup just like collecting
on God, Allah, bliss, eternity, ad finitum, ad nauseum. No evidence
whatsoever - just endless words, words, words. Oh, yes, and endless
sales and property and commodified experience.
"This is the life you died to get to" just didn't catch
your attention, eh? You just looked at the bill of sale in your
hand and the alarms in your head told you to get somewhere else
you were needed.
Character, therapy, suicide, revolution. Therapy is basically
anything that keeps the mechanisms turning. Therapy is almost
automated - internally and externally. You have many ways to spend
the second half of your life medicating the results of the first
half - and, that will probably carry over into another lifetime.
Children will pay for their past generation's bills. Credit, interest,
payments, and collection as a whole are God and all that is eternal.
Ever thought of the moment? No? You should have because it's what
you gave us that you no longer have. Suffice it to say that deju
vu is a brain disorder wherein the moment is felt to be so
redundant that escape into fantasy becomes a reality more worth
it than the pricetagged existence called now and the problems
that being unrealistic may cause. Past lives are the fantasy world
where it finds pathological haven. That's a problem for you less
than the contract requiring escape in the first place which costs
you a second, third, and fourth time. Compounding is what we call
it. A fictitiously valued and substanceless product that you invested
in over and over - as taxpayer, as consumer, as worker, as student,
as investor, as voter. Why it is not ruthlessly and immediately
superseded makes us laugh every time you do it again. It's a bonus
- memory has no reference point without unitary space-time, and
so you forget everything that's right in front of you. It's been
detailed out by Erich Fromm in Fear of Freedom, by Wilhelm
Reich in The Mass Psychology of Fascism, by Theodor Adorno
in The Culture Industry, and Guy Debord in Society of
the Spectacle. Another laugh! Meanwhile, you - with all those
messianic guides and maps to the past and the future! Maps of
the past all lead to the same point from which you sought to escape,
and the future - well, another clue in your very hands, most likely
carrying mildew from times past - the future only exists in comic
books, worlds fair booths, car shows, the wishful thoughts of
tiny minds - and in the interest-entitling paper we carry on time.
So - you got the payment for which your class bargained - a few
shiny things that lasted a short while. On the other side of the
equation, we control time and space - and you! We get all the
time in all the worlds - past, present, future, and any others
found along the way - read the contract. So, on your knees - facing
the bank of your choice - pray for market fluctuations or a job
opening in the upper 3%, but be prepared for disappointment because
you won't find it in your current life... that was sold in that
past life - yesterday. And, not in a next life either - you sold
that today. You can want, need, and hope, and all the rest - which,
by the way, you'll rarely get - and certainly not on our time
or in our space.
Besides, we can't give back what we never bought. But we do recognize
the need for your Garden of Timeless Escapes. Especially
so, now that the quality of time and the quantity of time are
going to be made virtual by the complete ownership of time. In
that sense we shall continue to release upgrade and make new-and-improved
virtual ways for you to experience time. Lines will continue.
Obsolescence starts at the point of production now so time-based warrantees will have no meanings. In terms of survival both age
is nearly a complete deficit - as no experience and having experience
are squeezing in on profits from both sides. Hey - now that we've
got it all - who needs a production force anyway. We just need
time vaults and space guardians. You can keep the limited subjectivity
and limiting character we gave you. Aside from needing it to survive
what you're left with - they will continually and automatically
generate entertaining realities for you - to while away what's
left of your time. Think of it as a team effort. We're all in
this together. It's called doing time. True, we're laughing not
with but at you now, but it's been real.
Some groups may try to offend your sensibilities with suggestions
that we really have nothing that you don't have to give us on
a daily basis - that time can be recaptured and space reinvented.
In particular, they don't frighten us. You, on the other hand
might be trouble if you banded together in forms we haven't provided
for such occasions. Go ahead - contact these Situationist-inspired
individuals. Have a great time.
